Fellow Humans....Casey and I are having a party. AND YOU ARE INVITED!
At this party we will celebrate life.
At this party we will welcome everyone no matter your color, your country, your identity, your sexual preference or your bank account balance.
At this party we will reserve a space for you.
At this party we will give the mic to the voiceless.
At this party we will honor those of you who have been held captive by small thinking.
At this party your differences will be celebrated.
At this party your thoughts will be as equal as our thoughts.
At this party you will find evolution.
At this party you will be free.
Our party is about our choice to leave behind thought, idealism and theology that serves only a few.
Our party is about our choice to embrace love by way of justice instead of by fear.
Our party is about leaving behind Evangelical Christianity and embracing a Love that Wins!
Many of you have communicated your disappointment in us, in our family, for how we have abandoned our faith and Christianity. You've called our expressed opinions "disgusting", "betrayal", "heretical", "anti-christian", that "we don't love God", that we are "pro-abortion" and on and on. These are powerful things you have said to us. These are damaging to both us and to yourself. So I think it's time to be very clear about who we are and who we are not.
We are not...living up to your expectations and nor do/will we try. We have done that for a very long time at the cost of our family, marriage and mental health. We do not strive to be or appear to be holy. We know this would make you a lot more comfortable with us if we did. But we are not consumed with your comfort. You are your own responsibility.
We are not...republicans. And because we are not republicans, this does not answer the question you have about whether we are still Christians. You may need to learn how to separate those two things.
We are not...loyalists. Unless we are loyal to justice and the love that flows from that.
We are not...heretics. You have accused us of this both while we served you in the church pews and when we chose to work "regular" jobs like you. This is about YOUR idea of the law that serves you to justify YOUR theology.
We are not...evangelical Christians. We will no longer partake in Patriarchal, racist, anti-immigrant, anti-women theologies. We don't believe Jesus supported that system either.
BUT we are...anti-racist, feminist, affirming (we don't need the accepting part if we are actually affirming), pro-police reform and environmentally conscious.
We are...evolutionary in thought and practice simply because we choose to keep learning.
We are...truth seekers willing to unravel all the bullshit we were fed in American history books and societal norms.
We are...believers that changes of injustice start with embracing humanity. Equal and inclusive.
We are...emphatic that children should not be separated from their families and locked in cages. Ever. Ever.
We are...pro all humans around the globe. You may not like the other country, but their humanity is AS valuable as yours. We may not like the leaders or way of life some countries exhibit, but frankly....we aren't too crazy about the hate and leadership in our own.
We are...spiritual. And would love a conversation around the topic. We see much bigger and broader than American Christianity. And we love Jesus...all that he did and commissioned us to do. We see that the box of organized religion has its place and need, but it also comes with inherent traps. The energy we spend in spiritual practice isn't going to be spent on unraveling from these traps, but rather towards expanding and sharing the goodness of The Divine. The box was too small for the goodness we saw Her bestowing on humanity....its time for us to repent (rethink how we were thinking) and grow in the experience of The Divine. Our language around spirituality has changed because we need vocabulary that grows with our understanding of Her interaction with us.
We are...offering ourselves the freedom to explore beyond our raised theologies and practices. If we are going to embrace the vastness of The Divine, we will have to open our minds to thought that moves beyond the boundaries of evangelical christianity, tear apart the programming from The Divine and be willing to have been wrong. The definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over again while expecting a different result. We were expecting MORE...and the programming we came from and participated in was resulting in less, not more. We were limiting The Divine. We were no longer aligned with that programming and so we set ourselves free.
We are....allies to the marginalized. Justice is our heart and we are motivated by it.
We have not "lost our faith". But the church has lost our loyalty. We have our faith in tact, but you may not like how expansive and inclusive it is becoming. That's ok. Just stop calling it disgusting. (you only prove our points for us).
Instead...grow with us. Offer yourself the same freedom to learn who you are, who The Divine could be, and who might fit into your life for a richer and brighter experience. We challenge you to rethink how you've been thinking...maybe it just needs to start with rethinking how you think of us.
We hope you'll join our party...it's a beautiful space we are creating!
May the depths of Divine Love illuminate your shadows and evolve you to unending growth!
